Borussia Dortmund are showing interest in Manchester City wonderkid Brahim Diaz, whose future at the Etihad is uncertain, Spanish newspaper Marca reports.
Brahim, who turns 19 this week, is wanted by Girona FC on loan for the new season, a plan City are all for, but the Spaniard has resisted a loan switch so far and wants to prove himself in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
With Diaz out of contract in a year’s time, there are fears he could quit the club if an understanding on his future isn’t reached, with the Blues hopeful of a resolution in the next two to three days.
According to Marca, Dortmund could provide an enticing opportunity for Brahim who would want to play in a European competition if he did agree to leave City on loan.
BVB’s usual strategy is to buy young players outright, as they did Jadon Sancho from City a year ago, and any loan deal would have to follow the player signing a new deal at the Etihad to prevent him walking away when his contract is up next summer.
If Dortmund did get their hands on Brahim, be it permanently or on loan, it would mean a reunion with Sancho, after the two were teammates in City’s Elite Development Squad along with Phil Foden.
18-year-old Sancho quit City for the German side in an £8million deal last year and went on to make 12 Bundesliga appearances. He recently played against his former side in the pre-season ICC competition and said he’d had a “point to prove” against Guardiola’s men.
City will be desperate to avoid Brahim following the same path as Sancho, who the club had big plans for, and will hope to reach an understanding with the talented teen in the days ahead.
