Pep Guardiola couldn’t hide his delight at the performances of his young Manchester City team after they turned around a 2-0 deficit to beat Bayern Munich 2-3 in their final ICC game of the U.S. tour tonight.
City’s team grew even younger when Riyad Mahrez was forced off with an ankle problem early on, but his replacement, Bernardo Silva, turned out to be the match-winner with two lovely, Messi-esque finishes.
On the topic of Mahrez, Pep Guardiola had little to say after tonight’s game, with the Algerian likely to undergo a scan to determine the severity of his ankle problem.
“I don’t know about Mahrez’s condition,” Pep said at a press conference.
The Blues lost their previous two games on tour, to Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool and Guardiola said analysing those defeats helped the team today.
“We analysed our mistakes from the previous games and we played a lot better today. We started really well and had a lot of chances. We kept going and I am satisfied.”
The team was packed with teenagers, so much so that young stars such as Bernardo and Aymeric Laporte were among the most experienced out there. And Pep was proud of how the likes of Brahim Diaz, Eric Garcia and Luke Bolton performed.
“We came here with a lot of young players and new players. So for them, it will be good for the future. It helps them to understand the game.
“I like to see my players fight for our teammates and play like a humble team.
“You cannot imagine how much I have enjoyed these two weeks with these guys. The young guys have desire. They open their eyes and listen because they have their whole career ahead of them. I want to say thank you to them.”
And not to forget Phil Foden, who himself is an injury concern after limping off while clutching his hamstring. Pep praised the 18-year-old’s ‘England’ mentality.
“Phil Foden played an outstanding game today, he is a fighter, he is a guy who runs. He has an England mentality as in he never ever gives up. But I am so satisfied with all of them.”
