Phillip Cocu, the new head coach of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, has contacted his former Barcelona teammate Pep Guardiola to request one of Manchester City’s brightest young talents on loan, Turkish source Fotomac claims.
Cocu, who left PSV Eindhoven to take over at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium this summer, wants to take 19-year-old Lukas Nmecha on loan for the 2018-19 season, it is reported.
Nmecha is one of the most highly regarded prospects at the Etihad and is on the fringes of Pep Guardiola’s first team squad, having three appearances for the senior side last season.
And according to Fotomac, Guardiola isn’t against the idea and will consider it. No decision on Nmecha’s future will be made until City’s tour of the US is open and he returns to England.
Cocu took another City talent, Oleksandr Zinchenko, on loan to PSV in the 2016-17 season, but was criticised by some for seldom using the talented Ukraine, who Guardiola made better use of the following season at a much higher level.
Whether Pep will entrust Cocu with the development of Nmecha, a striker with great potential, remains to be seen and there is likely to be plenty of interest from other clubs in the England youth international if City are open to a loan.
