Joao Santos became a familiar name during the Jorginho saga, with the player’s agent often commenting on developments up to the point where he said clearly that Jorginho was going to join Manchester City and was delighted with the move.
Then in a late twist, Chelsea outbid City and landed the talented midfielder, delivering a blow to Pep Guardiola’s transfer plans.
Pep felt Jorginho was so perfect for his City side that, to date, the Catalan has yet to pursue any big name alternatives City could have a shot at such as Mateo Kovacic, Miralem Pjanic and Thiago Alcantara, with the suggestion being he may settle for what he has.
There are several versions of why Jorginho didn’t join City, with the club briefing that Napoli strong-armed him towards Chelsea and branding the Italian club ‘unprofessional’.
And for the first time since Jorginho joined Chelsea, agent Santos has been asked to comment on what happened. The Brazilian representative was unfortunately very coy, but alluded to the transfer market being ‘dynamic’, which means nothing is ever certain until the contract is signed – as Chelsea found out a decade ago when City pipped them to Robinho.
“Jorginho joining Chelsea rather than Manchester City? The transfer market is dynamic so he’s a Chelsea player, will try to do his best to be a player of great value, and maintain his place in the national team,” Santos told TMW.
Asked if the 26-year-old was a specific request of new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, Santos believes that was the case.
“I guess it was a request from the coach. The lad has already settled, he is really well.
“It’s the beginning of a new path [with Sarri], a new philosophy. We all know him, he’s a good coach. And if he does as he did in Naples, the fans will have fun.”
