In news that may disappoint Manchester City fans who had been hoping for a big name alternative to Jorginho, the club have no plans to pursue another midfielder this summer, according to the Telegraph.
Both Bayern Munich star and Pep Guardiola protégé Thiago Alcântara and experienced Juventus star Miralem Pjanić have been popular in the rumour mill over recent days, but City have no interest in signing either, it is reported.
City have signed teenage French sensation Claudio Gomes from Paris Saint-Germain, and he will officially join the club when he hits 18 next week, but it is unclear if he is ready for the rigors of Premier League football.
That means Ilkay Gündogan and Fabian Delph – returning to his natural position with left-back Benjamin Mendy fit again – will cover for 33-year-old Fernandinho, while there are other options such as Kevin De Bruyne in a deeper role or even Danilo to play the holding midfield role.
It isn’t completely impossible that plans will change before the transfer window shuts in a few weeks, but as things stand Riyad Mahrez may be the only major signing of a fairly quiet summer for the Premier League champions – unless Guardiola has a surprise in store for us.
