Girona FC want to scale down their agreement with Manchester City to loan players from the Premier League champions by taking three instead of five Etihad talents this coming season.
Last season, five players headed over to the Catalan club, but only Pablo Maffeo was a big success, leading to him joining VfB Stuttgart for £8.8million this summer on the back of his impressive stint at Girona.
Aleix García showed flashes of talent, but highly-rated Brazilian Douglas Luiz struggled for game time, while Marlos Moreno and Larry Kayode flopped and were sent back to Manchester for new loan moves in January. Kayode has since joined Shakhtar Donetsk on a permanent deal.
García, 21, is returning to Girona for a second season and will be announced imminently. Despite being in and out of the team last year, he remains a very highly-rated talent and recently won his first Spain under-21 cap.
With a new coach in charge – former Barcelona assistant Eusebio Sacristán – García should see more game time. The same could be said for Douglas Luiz, who may also return for a second stint at the Montilivi after suffering from a lack of game time last term.
The third player Girona want is the prodigious teenager Brahim Diaz, but convincing City to send him over may be easier said than done.
In an interview with Munco Deportivo published today, Brahim himself said speculation of a loan switch to the La Liga said was just that at this point.
“I know nothing about that. I only know that I’m still with City. They are just rumours,” said Brahim.
“I’m totally focused on my team. I want to continue with my growth, succeed at City and win titles.”
