Manchester City have offered personal terms to Portuguese forward Rafael Leão, considered to be an elite talent with similar potential to Kylian Mbappé, according to The Sunday Times.
The 6’2″ tall 19-year-old is without a club after he followed senior stars such as William Carvalho, Gelson Martins and Rui Patricio in rescinding his contract with Sporting CP, after players were attacked by thugs at the club’s training ground last month.
Following up on a report from Jornal de Notícias in Portugal, which claimed City had accelerated their interest in Leão, Duncan Castles reports in The Sunday Times that a contract has been offered to the Portugal under-21 international.
Castles, who first reported on City’s interest in February, says City hope to take advantage of Leão’s ‘just cause’ termination to secure a deal.
They can expect competition, with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea having been credited with an interest in recent months, but City, who were reportedly willing to pay €25million-plus for Leão, will hope to land themselves one of Portugal’s hottest talents on the cheap.
