Ilkay Gündogan is attracting the interest of La Liga champions Barcelona this summer according to reports in both England and Germany, but the player insists he is happy at the Etihad Stadium.
The Germany midfielder is two years into his City career and after an injury-hit debut campaign in which he managed only 16 appearances in all competitions, he appeared 48 times last season and played his part in the Blues’ double-winning success.
Speaking to Arab News, Gündogan did not sound like a man who has had his head turned by Barcelona.
“I have two years to go on my current contract,” said the 27-year-old. “Everyone can see I am really happy here.
“With the way we play, the people around me, in the city, in the community, I really enjoy it.”
Barça may already be looking elsewhere, with the latest reports linking Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcântara with a return to Camp Nou.
Gündogan was asked about City’s success and while proud of it, he acknowledged how difficult it will be to defend the title and build on last season’s success.
“It was great to win the Premier League title, but there are plenty of things still to achieve. The most difficult thing next season will be to defend the title.
“Everyone will want to beat Man City and the champions. We are going to try again in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. We have all the possibilities to be a successful team again.”
