Germany were shocked in their World Cup opener against Mexico earlier today, falling to a 1-0 defeat.
It was not the start expected from the defending champions, who seemed short on ideas against a compact Mexican defence, who looked dangerous on the counter attack.
One of the big talking points, particularly among Manchester City fans, was if the absent Leroy Sané would have made a different. The 22-year-old was controversially left out of Germany’s squad by Joachim Löw, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt preferred.
We posed the question on Twitter of whether Leroy would have made a difference today and received some varied responses.

Definitely. Germany deserve this L for leaving Leroy at home. I wish they go out.

given how good Reus and Brandt were I doubt it. Problem was midfield and fullbacks, not attack

Lowe must have thought of something before making this call. Just like hart didnt suit pep's plans, sane didnt suit to lowe's plans. And I am not undermining the season sane had.

Without a doubt. The PL is the best league in the world. To leave out the young player of the year within that league is a mistake. Germany have no penetration either flank.

No Gundogan, No Can and they didn't even bother to take Sane to Russia. Then played an unfocused game against a win-hungry Mexico team that beat them soundly. Given what I saw today, I don't think @LeroySane19 would've made a difference.

Yeah, it is. It would be better with Sane in Draxler's place

Germany had one pace and it was slow. The midfieldrs looked like they had lead weights in their boots, particularly going backwards. Think Sane was better off out of that shambles.

Both Brandt and Sane should've been in the team. Draxler was only good in spots. Werner and Mueller had a sub-par game.

To think low wouldn’t want to have him at least coming off the bench and just running wild is insane. Imagine being a defender and seeing sane come on in the 65th while you’re holding onto a 1-0 lead. Ridiculous decision

Speed kills! What an in-Sane decision not to bring Leroy.

I understand if the coach says that he doesn’t fit the team tactically but I’m not being funny bringing a player like Leroy on in say the 75th minute and telling him to just run at a defense would be an amazing asset to have.
