It’s easy to be sceptical when a rumour pops up out of nowhere from The Sun and today’s edition of the newspaper claimed that Barcelona want to sign Ilkay Gündogan from Manchester City.
While it had the hallmarks of a throwaway transfer story, it shouldn’t be dismissed too quickly. That is because the claim has been backed up by one of Germany’s biggest sources today, with the BILD newspaper reporting Barça are interested in recruiting 27-year-old Gündogan.
BILD has its own information and states that Barcelona have already been in contract with both Ilkay and his adviser about a possible transfer.
Like the article in The Sun, the German publication says Gündogan is viewed as an ideal replacement for Andres Iniesta, who has left the club this summer for Vissel Kobe after a glittering career at Camp Nou.
City are not thought to have any interest in selling Gündogan, so unless he asks for a move, which isn’t impossible considering he had an agreement to join the Catalan giants in 2015, a transfer seems unlikely.
Should Gündogan actually depart the Etihad though, City could expect more than double the £20million they paid for him, with the Blues likely to demand over £50million for the Germany midfielder.
