Despite a disappointing season on loan at Girona FC, highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz will be looked at by Pep Guardiola before his next step is decided, Globo Esporte reports.
Douglas, 20, was given just 295 minutes of game time by Pablo Machin in La Liga, far less than anticipated following his £10.7million move from Vasco da Gama last summer and subsequent loan move to Spain.
His experience at Girona FC means the next step of his development is important, and it is reported that Douglas and his representatives have been notified of City’s plans. Douglas will report for pre-season training after the World Cup and Pep Guardiola will personally evaluate him.
Douglas’ future is yet to be determined, but the fact that Pep wants to look at him speaks volumes of his potential, and the Catalan coach has not been put off by his lack of minutes at Girona.
A return to Girona can’t be ruled out if the decision is made to send Douglas on loan again, with Machin having departed for Sevilla and Eusebio Sacristán taking over.
Eusebio, a former Barcelona B and Real Sociedad coach, will have his own ideas, and Girona’s sporting director Quique Cárcel is keen on bringing back both Douglas Luiz and Aleix García from City for second loan spells.
