Manchester City have failed to reach an agreement with Raheem Sterling over a new long-term contract, Sky Sports News reports.
According to the TV channel, the two parties remain ‘poles apart’ on the player’s wages and with the World Cup around the corner, talks have been frozen and no new negotiations are planned.
City have met Sterling’s representatives on two separate occasions since the season came to an end, with the two sides unable to find any sort of agreement over the player’s wages.
The 23-year-old is out of contract in two years time, meaning there is no immediate urgency to renew his deal, but the fact that talks continue to stall could be a bad sign.
Sterling has been the victim of several smear campaigns from corners of the English press and might be tempted by the idea of playing for a top foreign club such as Real Madrid should they come calling.
Before that becomes a possibility, City will sit down again with his representatives and try to reach an agreement that will see the England winger commit his long-term future to the Premier League champions.
