Girona FC eye new loan deals for young Manchester City midfield duo – report

Girona FC are currently without a head coach after Pablo Machín left for Sevilla, but sporting director Quique Cárcel is planning for next season – and those plans include Manchester City talents.

The Catalan club want to renew the loans of City midfield duo Douglas Luiz and Aleix García for a second season according to AS, amid fears that they could lose stars like Portu and Stuani, who are subject to interest from other clubs.

It was a difficult season for Douglas after his £10.7million move to Man City from Vasco da Gama and subsequent loan to Girona, with his 15 appearances in La Liga amounting to just 293 minutes of game time.

Aleix, another highly-rated midfield prospect, fared better but also struggled for consistent minutes on the pitch, featuring for 841 minutes across his 20 appearances in Spain’s top-flight.

With players leaving and a new coach expected, there may be more opportunities next year if the 20-year-olds choose to renew. Aleix hinted several days ago that he would like to spend a second campaign at the Estadi Montilivi having built a good rapport with Girona’s fans.

The most successful loanee from City to Girona this season was Pablo Maffeo, whose form promoted Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart to break their club record by handing over €10million to City for his services

Larry Kayode and Marlos Moreno failed to make any impact during their spells, with Kayode faring better at his new loan club Shakhtar Donetsk, and Colombian winger Moreno loaned to Flamengo in Brazil.

Next season promises to be different on several levels for Girona, and more City loanees could join Douglas Luiz and Aleix García if they stick around. A new coach will be appointed soon, but it won’t be Domènec Torrent, who has turned down the role to remain on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff.

Another of Pep’s assistants, Mikel Arteta, is also linked with the vacant post, but former Barcelona assistant Juan Carlos Unzué is currently best-positioned to take the reins.
