Mikel Arteta could be presented with his first managerial role by City Football Group member Girona FC if his fellow Manchester City assistant coach, Domènec Torrent, turns down the job, Catalan newspaper SPORT has revealed.
55-year-old Torrent, who was in charge at Girona in the 2005-06 season, is the front-runner to replace Sevilla-bound Pablo Machin as head coach, but has yet to make a decision.
And it is reported that City, who via the CFG, have an involvement in Girona, have put forward the name of Mikel Arteta as an alternative to Torrent should he decide to remain in Manchester.
Arteta was on the verge of getting the Arsenal job before the club made a late decision to instead appoint Unai Emery, and Girona would provide him with his first managerial experience – potentially setting him up to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium a few years down the line.
Torrent is a Girona fan but has previously stated that he’d prefer not to become a manager until Pep Guardiola retires. The chance to coach his beloved Girona may be enough to sway him, but if not, it could be 36-year-old Mikel Arteta who is handed the opportunity.
