Manchester City have made their first formal offer for Napoli midfielder Jorginho, presenting a bid of €45million (£39.4million) for the 26-year-old, according to reports from Corriere del Mezzogiorno and La Repubblica.
It is the first official bid made by the Premier League champions for Pep Guardiola’s number one midfield target and although it is almost certain to be rejected, there is a feeling that a deal can be struck soon.
Additionally, City are said to have offered Jorginho wages of €4million-a-season, with personal terms expected to be no issue which the player’s agent has made quite clear with recent comments.
Napoli’s response is not known, but reports from local sources suggest City will need to go higher.
According to Radio CRC, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said he wants €70-75million for the Italian international, with the player himself growing impatient at the club in the knowledge that City have a ‘Plan B’ lined up.
Meanwhile, another station, Radio Kiss Kiss, believes a deal could be closed soon at around €50million (£43.8million), with Napoli already eyeing Zenit’s Leandro Paredes and Real Betis’ Dani Ceballos as potential replacements.
A Napoli fan called into Radio Kiss Kiss on Friday evening, and while the word of a supporter should never be taken as gospel, he told the station: “I’ll give you a market bomb on Napoli: De Laurentiis has already decided on a big transfer. And it is Jorginho. I spoke with close friends of the midfielder and they told me that the player is leaving.”
Jorginho to Manchester City looks to be getting closer and Txiki Begiristain will hope to hand Pep Guardiola his new defensive midfielder within the next week or so.
