Manchester City could still make a marquee signing this summer even if they successfully conclude deals for Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho, Sam Lee of Goal reports.
Blues bosses are in negotiations with Leicester and Napoli, trying to agree fees for winger Mahrez and midfielder Jorginho, and that is expected to be the bulk of City’s major transfer business this summer.
However, they are leaving the door ajar for a mega-money deal later this summer if given any encouragement that a ‘dream’ target such as Hazard or Mbappé is available.
Mbappé has long been a target of City’s, who tried to sign him two years ago when he had only a handful of appearances to his name for Monaco. Another attempt was made last summer but he ultimately decided on a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
The chances of signing either Hazard or Mbappé are described as ‘remote’ but the funds will be available if there is any possibility of either moving to the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, Lee states that although City are monitoring the recently-linked Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, Guardiola currently has no plans to add a centre-back to his squad.
De Ligt, 18, is one of Europe’s most highly-rated young talents and City’s stance may change if any serious rival interest emerges for the Dutch international, or if any of City’s current centre-backs pick up injuries over the summer.
John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and the injury prone Vincent Kompany are all going to the World Cup, with Aymeric Laporte the only City centre-back with the summer off after not being selected by France.
