Arsenal will today hold their first official talks with Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta ahead of potentially appointing him as manager, Sky Sports News reports.
The 36-year-old has had a key role on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff and is very highly regarded at the Etihad Stadium, with some even suggesting he could be Guardiola’s long-term replacement.
However, should Arsenal formally offer their former midfielder the managerial job, vacated by Arsene Wenger, City will not stand in his way.
Arteta is the leading candidate to take over at the Gunners, despite never managing a team at any level before. If appointed, he would be handed a transfer budget of £50million to try and steer the Gunners back into the top four.
On his Monday Night Football guest appearance, Pep gave some insight into the talent Arteta has developed as a coach, saying he has played a part in the improvements of wing wizards Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling.
“Mikel Arteta has helped them both to make a lot of actions near to the box,” Guardiola explained. “The qualities one against one, we say to the wingers when you receive the ball, if the control is good, the shape is good, go, go, it doesn’t matter if you lose the ball – try.”
