From Italy: Mourinho asks super-agent Jorge Mendes to beat Man City to top summer target

Manchester United want to beat Manchester City to the signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho in the summer transfer window, Napoli outlet CalcioNapoli24 exclusively reports.

Jorginho, 26, is reportedly Pep Guardiola’s top midfield target but he could now face major competition from neighbours Manchester United after Jose Mourinho instructed agent Jorge Mendes to close a deal for Jorginho before City.

It continues the trend of United going after the same targets as City after making Alexis Sanchez the highest-paid player in English football in January to snatch him from City’s grasp.

The Reds have also been linked with Fred, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder who was City’s main target for the ‘6’ position before they changed their strategy and looked more towards a possession-oriented holding midfielder.

Claudio Russo of CalcioNapoli24 says Mourinho’s will is probably to anticipate Guardiola’s move for Jorginho and in employing super-agent Mendes, he is hopeful that Manchester United can swoop in first and land the player.

Jorginho has said in previous interviews that he would favour a club of City’s playing style and that may help Guardiola’s cause if an auction breaks out.

“I think that I could fit (in the Premier League),” he told reporters earlier this year. “It depends on who else is around me – I need players with the same characteristics that I have.

“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure.

“If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not an usual one.”

Yesterday, it was reported by Gazzetta dello Sport that Napoli had set a starting price of €40million for Jorginho, but if both Manchester City and Manchester United are in for him, they will be optimistic of the fee being driven up as the Mancunian giants battle for superiority in the transfer market.
