Atletico Madrid contact Sergio Agüero over stunning return to Spain this summer – report

Atlético Madrid have contacted the entourage of Manchester City forward Sergio Agüero and held exploratory talks about the potential of the Argentine rejoining his former club, Radio MARCA reports.

According to their information, Kun doesn’t see a return to Atletico negatively, despite an acrimonious exit when he joined City in 2011 and was criticised for the manner of his departure.

Atlético are at work on a replacement for Antoine Griezmann in the summer, with Barcelona poised to trigger the French international’s €100million release clause, although Radio MARCA is keen to point out that the arrival of Agüero would not necessarily depend on Griezmann’s exit.

Edinson Cavani is another name linked with a move to the Wanda Metropolitano, with Agüero just one of several forwards they are exploring deals for in the upcoming transfer window.

It is claimed that ‘Operation Agüero’ seemed impossible months ago, but the Madrid club have presented their ambitious project to Kun and it ‘seems to fulfill the expectations of the player’.

Though easy to dismiss such a story as gossip, it is important to recall that one of the most well-connected journalists for Agüero news, Jose Alvarez Haya, reported back in January that the 29-year-old was on Atlético’s radar.

Sergio’s position has been consistent, with the iconic forward always saying he wants to return to his beloved Independiente when his Manchester City contract expires in 2020.

And despite his alleged interest in Atlético Madrid’s project, realistically such a deal would only seem likely if City had an appetite to sell him, which would mean signing a big-name replacement this summer.

Agüero is famed for his professionalism and having never caused any problems at the Etihad, something that is unlikely to change in the latter stages of his stay.
