VfB Stuttgart have made a club record bid of €9million (£7.9million) bid for Manchester City right-back Pablo Maffeo, Eurosport Deutschland reports.
Maffeo, 20, has impressed on loan at Girona FC this season, looking good in La Liga and winning plaudits for his individual performances against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
His form has alerted a host of clubs, with Valencia also interested in acquiring him ahead of their Champions League campaign next season.
It is unclear how City will respond to Stuttgart’s €9million offer, which would break their record fee currently held by Zdravko Kuzmanović (€8million from Fiorentina in 2009), but with expensive signings Kyle Walker and Danilo currently manning the right-back position, both City and Pablo have a decision to make.
The possibility of another loan move can’t be ruled out, but that would require Maffeo to renew his contract, which currently expires in 2019. It is thought that a contract renewal could be agreed without any complications.
Maffeo’s agent, Pere Guardiola, has good relations with Stuttgart’s sporting director Michael Reschke, who worked with Pere’s brother, Pep Guardiola, while they were together at Bayern Munich. This could help facilitate a deal if Maffeo is keen on a move to the Bundesliga.
Were City to agree a sale, the likelihood is they would place some sort of buy-back clause in the deal, as has become common when they let talented prospects leave the club.
