Legendary Portuguese goalkeeper Vítor Baía, who won 80 caps for his country, has named Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson as one of the three best goalkeepers in the world – ahead of Manchester United ace David de Gea.
Baía was speaking to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo while in Nyon, Switzerland as an ambassador of the UEFA Youth League, and shared his views on a number of topics.
On the topic of goalkeepers, obviously a speciality for the former Porto and Barcelona player, his preferences seemed to go towards the modern style ball-playing goalkeeper, and he ranked Ederson among the three best.
“Ter Stegen is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world with Ederson of Manchester City and Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich,” Baía told Mundo Deportivo.
Many, particularly Manchester United fans, will be surprised to see David de Gea excluded from the list of such a famous goalkeeper.
Arsenal legend Martin Keown also recently made a case for Ederson, who has had a phenomenal debut year in England, claiming he should have been in the PFA Team of the Year ahead of United’s De Gea.
“The goalkeeper [in the team] should be Ederson. Manchester City have won the league because they have been the best passing team,” Keown said to the Daily Mail. “In the way he passes the ball out from the back, Ederson is integral to everything they have achieved.
“Not only is he hitting balls cleaner than most central midfielders but he is pulling off great saves, too.
“Think back to Claudio Bravo last year who was so indecisive in goal for City.
“Of course David de Gea is an excellent goalkeeper but he goes into a game knowing that he will have to make two or three excellent saves.
“Ederson will spend much of a match with little to do but will still pull off a moment of brilliance when called upon.”
