Bayer Leverkusen have fended off some of Europe’s biggest clubs to sign one of Brazil’s hottest young talents, 17-year-old Paulinho, Globo Esporte reports.
The Vasco da Gama winger has been linked with Manchester City recently days after reports from Brazil stated that his agent, Carlos Leite, who has a good relationship with City, flew to England.
Leite, who was instrumental in City signing Douglas Luiz from Vasco last year, was never confirmed to be in the UK to talk specifically to City, but it was strongly suggested that the Blues were one of the teams in pursuit of Paulinho.
In the end, it was Bayer Leverkusen who saw off interest from the likes of City, Benfica, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain to sign the teenager. The Bundesliga club will pay €20million, of which Vasco will receive 65%, with the rest going to the player and his agent Leite.
Paulinho will join Bayer on July 15 when he turns 18 and is tipped to go very far in the sport.
City continue to scout and monitor a host of young Brazilian talents, with Brazil under-20 international Lucas Halter the latest player from the South American hotbed of football to be linked.
