He remains a favourite among Manchester City fans even three years after leaving for Monaco in a £9million deal, and Portuguese international Rony Lopes still has City and its fans in his heart.
Now 22, Lopes has developed superbly in France with the principality club, scoring 13 goals in Ligue 1 this season, including 10 goals in his last 12 appearances – one of them against French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester City’s €30million (£26.3million) buy-back clause on Rony expired on 7 July 2017, so if City wanted him back, that’s no longer valid and they would have to sit at the negotiating table with Monaco.
Could Rony return some day? In an interview with Omnisport, the attacking midfielder made it clear that he still has a strong connection to the club, and while he didn’t explicitly say he wanted a return, he sounds open to the idea.
“I return to Manchester every time I can. My mother and brother still live there, so the connection is close,” Lopes told Omnisport.
“I had a great time at the club and managed to graduate at the Etihad, but my present is in Monaco. They invested and believed a lot in me, so my intention is to give back and win titles here.
“About the future… the future belongs to God.
“I have many friends in Manchester City so that I’m always up to date with the club. Great memories. And I also developed a connection with City fans, I see myself as one of them and they keep on cheering and supporting me wherever I go. It’s a great feeling.”
