Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred sounds like a man who would still love to play for Manchester City, despite reports in recent months that the Premier League champions have cooled on signing him.
It is neighbours Manchester United who have been more commonly linked with the 25-year-old of late, with more possession-oriented midfielders such as Thiago Alcântara and Julian Weigl becoming popular names on the City rumour mill.
Speaking to Globo Esporte in his homeland of Brazil though, Fred left no doubt that he’s still up for a move to the Etihad Stadium, and has even spoken to City’s Brazilian contingent about it.
“I spoke with the guys in the dressing room of the Seleção, and they said to come and play with them,” Fred said while laughing. “They are great players and Guardiola is an excellent coach. He has just become English champion.
“I’m sure my staff and family are working on it, finding the best place for me. City is a great team, but I have to wait, I don’t know where I’m going and have to stay focused because they will choose the best place for me, I’m sure.”
If City pass on the chance to sign him, it may well be that Fred ends up across town at Old Trafford. His ambition is to play in England and Manchester United could present an appealing alternative.
“I’ve been working very hard for this and I hope my wish can be fulfilled as soon as possible. I will be very happy to play for a great team in England.”
According to the Mirror earlier this week, Jose Mourinho is ready to outbid Pep Guardiola for Fred and pay as much as £50million for him.
