Former Arsenal star turned football pundit Martin Keown has argued that Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson should have been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year over Manchester United stopper David de Gea, because of his contribution to what City have achieved this season.
Ederson has been a sensation since arriving from Benfica last summer, with his saves and in particular his contributions to the build-up integral to City’s style of football under Pep Guardiola.
And Keown believes that while his saves may not be as common as De Gea’s, Ederson belongs in the City-dominated PFA TOTY along with teammates Otamendi, Walker, David Silva, De Bruyne and Aguero.
“The goalkeeper [in the team] should be Ederson. Manchester City have won the league because they have been the best passing team,” Keown said to the Daily Mail. “In the way he passes the ball out from the back, Ederson is integral to everything they have achieved.
“Not only is he hitting balls cleaner than most central midfielders but he is pulling off great saves, too.
“Think back to Claudio Bravo last year who was so indecisive in goal for City.
“Of course David de Gea is an excellent goalkeeper but he goes into a game knowing that he will have to make two or three excellent saves.
“Ederson will spend much of a match with little to do but will still pull off a moment of brilliance when called upon.”
