Manchester United will outbid Manchester City in any renewed attempt to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, according to the Wednesday edition of the Daily Mirror.
The 25-year-old Brazil international was a serious target for City in January and talks were held, but the Ukrainian giants didn’t want to sell Fred before the end of the season and no deal was done.
In the time that has passed since, City are said to have cooled their interest in Fred, although the possibility of a return for him has never been ruled out.
But should City go back for Fred, Jose Mourinho is said to be determined to outbid Pep Guardiola and will pay £50million with Manchester United desperate to close the gap on their double-winning neighbours.
Paul Pogba’s inability to play a more defensive role means Fred, who has been compared stylistically to Fernandinho, would fill a hole in the United side.
City’s ‘defend with possession’ ideology may move them more in the direction of a pass-master such as Weigl or Thiago, but should they decide again that Fred is the right man, the champions now face local opposition for his signature.
