Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is eyeing a reunion with his former Barcelona and Bayern Munich protégé Thiago Alcântara in the summer, according to the Mail on Sunday.
It’s well known that City are in the market for a midfielder capable of playing a deeper role, and having apparently cooled their interest in Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, old links with Borussia Dortmund star Julian Weigl have resurfaced.
Another name linked with a move to City in the past has now resurfaced though, with the Mail on Sunday claiming that Thiago is being eyed in a £50million transfer.
Guardiola wants three high-quality additions to his squad ahead of next season, believing more depth is required to compete on all fronts, and at 27, Thiago brings experience and the ability to play Guardiola’s possession-oriented style.
Bayern Munich rarely sell players they don’t want to though, and extracting the Spain international from the Allianz Arena could prove tricky for City chiefs. However, his injury problems mean a good offer from the Etihad could tempt Bayern chiefs into a sale.
Thiago has started just 10 Bundesliga games this season, appearing a further 5 times as a substitute. In the Champions League, he has managed 8 total appearances, scoring an impressive 3 goals.
