Manchester City have a 100 per cent win record under the referee who has been appointed for their uphill task against Liverpool on Tuesday night, Spain’s Mateu Lahoz.
The 41-year-old has been handed the whistle for a match in which Pep Guardiola’s out-of-form side must overturn a 3-0 deficit, something they are certainly capable of, but which the odds don’t favour.
City won Champions League ties against Dynamo Kiev (2016), AS Monaco (2017) and Napoli (2017) under Lahoz, which may give superstitious types some hope, although Blues will remember him booking Sergio Aguero for a non-dive which should have been a penalty against Monaco.
Liverpool have only had one match officiated by Lahoz, a 2-2 draw away at Ludogorets Razgrad in the 2014/15 Champions League group stage.
