Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan would be playing his club football in Catalonia today with FC Barcelona if not for Luis Enrique, a FIFA agent has revealed.
In an article with Turkish outlet Spor Mynet, Bayram Tutumlu has revealed just how close the Germany star came to joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.
“Before Arda Turan, Barcelona absolutely had an agreement with Ilkay,” Tutumlu explained.
“But there was Luis Enrique, who insisted instead on Arda Turan. I even spoke with the president of Barcelona.”
Gündogan himself has previously confirmed he was close to joining Barcelona, and this new information explains how Enrique preferred Arda Turan, who ultimately flopped at Camp Nou and is now on loan at İstanbul Başakşehir where he is a teammate of former City players Emmanuel Adebayor and Gaël Clichy.
City would go on to sign Gündogan the following year for an estimated fee of £20 million.
The midfielder has made 54 appearances for Manchester City to date, scoring 9 goals.
