It could be one of the most intense derby days in recent memory as Manchester City look to win the Premier League title on Saturday – but to do so they must beat neighbours Manchester United.
City are going to win the league but what a day it would be to clinch it. With that said, a new report suggests Guardiola is inclined to rest some of his star players against United to focus on the Champions League double header with Liverpool.
Either way, it promises to be a grand occasion and the referee has today been named as the experienced Martin Atkinson.
Atkinson has a history in the Manchester derby, having been in charge for one we’d rather forget when he allowed play to keep going… and going, leading to the ‘Fergie Time’ phrase being coined.
This season, the 47-year-old has been in charge of two City fixtures, both away games – the memorable 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the more recent 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor.
Our neighbours Manchester United have had Atkinson four times this season, three of them at Old Trafford, and are also unbeaten under him. Those include wins over West Ham and Chelsea, a 2-2 draw with Burnley, and the 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.
