Five players face second-leg suspensions in Liverpool vs. Manchester City at Anfield

Five players will be walking a disciplinary tightrope on Wednesday night when Manchester City face Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Three Man City stars are one yellow card away from missing the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, most notably midfield general Fernandinho, who picked up two bookings in the group stage.

Fernandinho’s likely replacement should he be suspended, Germany international Ilkay Gündoğan, is also a booking away from triggering a suspension, as is full-back Danilo.

As for Liverpool, who look set to be without Emre Can through injury, club captain Jordan Henderson is at risk, and so is Spanish full-back Alberto Moreno, who is likely to start on the bench.

Three yellow cards automatically trigger a one-match ban in the Champions League, but if the members of the winning team can survive both legs of the quarter-finals without getting one, the slate is wiped clean for the semi-finals – a new rule brought in last year to prevent so many big names missing the finals.
