Pep Guardiola has informed some of his star players that they will be rested for next weekend’s potentially title-clinching Manchester derby, Sam Lee of Goal reports.
A win at the Etihad Stadium would win City the league title at the earliest time any team has managed in the Premier League era, and to secure it against Manchester United would make it extra sweet.
However, Guardiola knows the title is all but wrapped up and sources close to the Catalan have said he is ‘desperate’ to reach the Champions League semi-finals this month and is prioritising the two games with Liverpool over the derby.
Subsequently, Pep has told a number of key names that they will be rested in the derby if the Champions League tie with Liverpool hangs in the balance after the first leg.
City have an impressive squad, meaning the side Guardiola does field against United will certainly be competitive, but if the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva were to be rested, the task could become more difficult.
Blues would love to see the title clinched on derby day, but with the Premier League won barring a catastrophe of levels never before seen, it is understandable that his main objective is to get through a tough two-legged tie with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
