Julian Weigl emerges as Manchester City’s top transfer target and wants move – report

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl, long linked with a move to Manchester City, has emerged as the club’s main target to reinforce the midfield in the summer, Jose Alvarez reports.

The Spanish journalist claims that not only do City want 22-year-old Weigl but the feeling is mutual, with the Germany international wanting an Etihad switch.

Jose adds that there is a good chance of this transfer happening, which would see Weigl arrive as Yaya Touré’s replacement.

Jorge Calabrés, who broke the news that City are back in for Isco, backed up Jose’s claim, saying Weigl and Isco are Pep Guardiola’s main objectives in the next transfer window, with Riyad Mahrez the second option behind Isco.

City are in the hunt for a holding midfielder and following reports that interest in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has cooled, there has been much speculation about who the man to arrive will be.

Jorginho of Napoli has been mooted as a candidate and sounded enthusiastic about the idea when asked, while Lazio sensation Sergej Milinković-Savić could be an option despite being more of an attack-minded midfielder, but Lazio want over €100million for him. Liverpool’s Emre Can is available on a free transfer in the summer and is another to have been mentioned.

Weigl, who already has more than 180 appearances in his club career at the age of 22, certainly fits the profile of a classic Pep Guardiola midfielder and has been tipped to arrive at the Etihad Stadium since even before Guardiola arrived. Could he be the man Pep has in mind to succeed Yaya Touré?
