Louis Van Gaal: I wanted Manchester United to play like Manchester City

Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has praised Pep Guardiola while admitting that the way Manchester City are now playing is what he envisioned for United during his tenure at Old Trafford.

The 66-year-old was in charge of United from 2014 until 2016 and won the FA Cup shortly before he was dismissed and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

And speaking to SPORT BILD in Germany, Van Gaal spoke of how he wanted Manchester United to play – like Pep Guardiola has City functioning now – but adding that he lacked the sufficient quality of talent to pull it off.

“Pep Guardiola is currently the best manager in the Premier League for me,” the Dutchman said. “Pep has made City a machine. He plays the football that I wanted to play with Manchester United.

“He has better players than I did at the time. For me, that would have taken longer. Unfortunately, I did not have the time for that.”
