Sam Lee reveals Manchester City interest in Tanguy Ndombele to the City Watch Podcast

One of the big talking points as the summer transfer window draws ever nearer is who will replace the outgoing Yaya Touré as City’s second defensive midfielder option.

It had seemed that Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred was the chosen one, but a raft of reports of late have said that City have gone cold on the 24-year-old, raising the question – who then?

Julian Weigl is one name to have resurfaced in the rumour mill, while Jorginho’s agent was at the Etihad Stadium on Friday night as his client featured for Italy.

One name not reported though, is France under-21 midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, who is making a huge impression at Lyon on loan from Amiens.

Speaking to the City Watch Podcast this week, Goal journalist Sam Lee revealed that he is a player on City’s radar, while also discussing the Weigl links.

“Weigl’s a name that’s always been linked, and I know before the Tottenham game there was another media briefing and Weigl was a name that was brought up,” Lee said on the fifteenth episode of the podcast.

“And they didn’t knock it down. And again, that might be because it’s genuine or might be a red herring.”

“Part of what I was able to hear is that they are just looking at other names [than Fred]. They probably want to get them done now, because if you remember two years ago there were pictures of Txiki and Pep meeting Gundogan’s agent, and that’s how we knew that open secret then.

“City will be looking around, but there’s a name I heard – (Tanguy) Ndombele, the lad at Lyon on loan from Amiens.

“I asked some people if he’d be ready to play (for City), but I don’t know if he’d be ready to do that yet.

“I don’t know if they’re looking at him for the future because he’s a young lad, or kind of like Douglas Luiz, who they loaned to Girona – maybe it’s that type of situation.

“Ndombele is being looked at to some extent – I don’t know how much”

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Ndombele, who has made 24 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon this season, but Pep Guardiola also has an eye on him and if City scouts continue to be impressed, perhaps an offer may soon follow.

Sam’s insight on Ndombele, Fred, Weigl, and many other transfer-related subjects can be heard in the latest City Watch Podcast.
