Pep Guardiola is known to have a passion for helping young footballers reach their potential and there have even been suggestions that he could move towards working with aspiring players after coaching.
The Manchester City boss has often observed youth teams play since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium and famously promoted some of La Masia’s finest talents, including Sergio Busquets, while at Barcelona.
But even the organisers of the KDB Cup, an under-15s tournament organised by Kevin De Bruyne in his hometown of Drongen, Belgium, didn’t expect to receive the news they did about Pep.
Speaking to reporters in Belgium, Paul Naudts, the president of the KDB Cup, revealed that Guardiola has accepted an invitation to attend the 2018 KDB Cup in June!
“We sent an invitation to Guardiola because Manchester City will take part for the first time this year,” Naudts said. “To our great surprise, Guardiola himself replied that he absolutely did not want to miss the event.
“We didn’t believe it, and we double-checked, with Kevin in particular. It was only after that that we were sure he was really coming.”
City will be represented in the competition by an U15 team, while the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Anderlecht and Zenit St Petersburg will also be involved.
