Manchester City could have another Brazilian in the squad next season with Pep Guardiola set to take a look at 19-year-old midfielder Douglas Luiz in preseason, Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte has confirmed.
The 19-year-old was signed from Vasco da Gama last summer in a deal reportedly worth £10.7million.
Douglas, a Brazil under-20 international, was then loaned to partner club Girona FC in La Liga, but has struggled for playing time, appearing for just 295 minutes in Spain’s top flight this season, with a further 155 minutes in the Copa del Rey.
Despite his struggles in Catalonia, Douglas remains very highly-rated and was ranked seventh in the FourFourTwo 100 Best Teenagers in the World list.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, who spent last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven and rarely played, is an example of a player Pep Guardiola has spotted talent in and nurtured into someone capable of playing at a high level. And Douglas Luiz will be among the starlets that the City boss will take a look at in the summer when so many of his stars are at the World Cup in Russia and subsequently will require extended breaks after.
According to UOL Esporte, Douglas will be watched closely by Guardiola and his assistants, after which three scenarios will be considered: a return to Girona FC, gaining experience at another club in Europe, or should he impress, joining the large Brazilian contingent in the Manchester City first team squad.
Douglas may find himself training alongside Ederson, Danilo, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus ahead of the 2018/19 season and his dream will be that he’ll also be playing alongside them soon.
