Manchester City will face Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final round, and while they may be comforted by the fact that the second leg will be at the Etihad Stadium, not Anfield, it’s certainly a tough draw.
City have not won at Anfield in any competition since 2003, and that record is going to worry some Blues heading in, but on the other hand the 5-0 win over Liverpool at the Etihad earlier this season shows that City’s next European opponents have as much to worry about.
The Blues’ sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, didn’t seem best pleased with the draw himself. In his comments after the draw in Nyon, the former Barcelona player said: “It’s a very difficult one. We like to travel and to go to another country in the Champions League but it is what it is.”
His reaction on camera also showed that he felt uncomfortable about Liverpool, although the minimal travel either side of the Manchester derby could be considered a good thing.
