Manchester City fans will have fingers crossed after latest international call-up

Manchester City fans will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself after Vincent Kompany was called up by Roberto Martinez for Belgium’s friendly against Saudi Arabia this month.

The City captain is joined, to the surprise of no one, by midfield ace Kevin De Bruyne, for the match which takes place on 27 March in Brussels.

Three City managers have had to worry about Kompany’s international commitments which have often seen him injured at crucial times, and were the same to happen now it would be a blow with the Champions League quarter-finals and Manchester derby coming up.

Vinny has managed to have a run of games without succumbing to any muscle injury lately, and has put in some imperious performances, including twice against Arsenal when the Blues beat their Premier League rivals 3-0 in both the league and Carabao Cup final.

The hope will be that Kompany and De Bruyne come through Belgium’s sole friendly of the international break unscathed ahead of a huge run of games for Pep Guardiola’s City.

City fans have reacted nervously on social media to Kompany’s call-up.
