The final Champions League Round of 16 games took place on Wednesday night with Bayern Munich completing the job against Besiktas and Barcelona turning over Chelsea at the Camp Nou.
The victories for two of Europe’s most successful clubs finalised the cast for the Champions League quarter-finals, with the draw set to take place on Friday.
The eight teams in the bag are:
– Bayern Munich
– Manchester City
– Real Madrid
City advanced with a two-legged win over FC Basel, despite the Swiss side ending a long unbeaten run at the Etihad Stadium against a heavily weakened City side.
On Tuesday, Sevilla pulled off the upset of the Round of 16 with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, eliminating Manchester United much to the delight of the blue side of Manchester.
The Spanish side, who City beat twice in the 2015/16 Champions League, would perhaps be the most favourable draw in the next stage of the competition, while a clash with Roma and emotional reunion with Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov may appeal to some.
Potential glamour ties include City vs. Barcelona, City vs. Bayern Munich and City vs. Real Madrid, while a two-legged encounter with Liverpool would surely be a footballing feast with plenty of goals. The other potential fixture against Juventus would see a real tactical battle between Pep Guardiola and Max Allegri, two of Europe’s most renowned coaches.
