Manchester City have been interested in signing the world’s greatest footballer, Lionel Messi, since the club was taken over in 2008, and there have been times when the little Argentine has seriously considered a move to the Etihad, only for it to never happen.
Now 30, Messi shows no sign of slowing down and has found the net 32 times in all competitions for Barça this season. He would still be a prize capture for City, the club always best-positioned to sign him if he sought a new adventure because of the presence of Pep Guardiola, Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano.
However, Soriano, the chief executive officer of Manchester City, has revealed that there is now no chance of Messi joining City or going anywhere else for that matter.
In his latest comments as part of a business trip in Argentina, Soriano appeared to put an end to the rumours once and for all.
“There is no chance of signing Messi,” Soriano said. “I know him and his family well and I know they are fine in Barcelona, which is where he needs to be.
“We will make our way without him, which will be more difficult because he is the best player in the history of football.
“He changed everything, he is a genius.”
There are two ways City fans may be able to see Messi at the Etihad Stadium this season, with Argentina set to face Italy in a prestige friendly on 23 March, with the club selling tickets.
The other, of course, would be if City draw Barcelona in the Champions League before the final, something most Blues will be hoping doesn’t happen in this Friday’s quarter-final draw.
