Manchester City wonderkid Phil Foden: I want to stay at City all my life

He’s the golden boy of Manchester City’s youth system, but Phil Foden would one day like to be one of the grizzled veterans at the Etihad Stadium.

The 17-year-old has made eight appearances for Pep Guardiola’s City side this season, a notable achievement considering the Blues are now one of Europe’s elite sides with a squad full of talent.

Local boy Foden, who was also the standout player at the U-17 World Cup last year, inspiring England to the trophy, has made no secret of what he wants in an exclusive interview with Dugout.

“Stay here all my life. That’s what I’m going to try, that’s what I want to do,” said Foden.

Foden, a City fan who has been at the club since his younger years, named one of his idols – another graduate of the academy.

“I remember the likes of Elano and Micah Richards, who came through the academy. He was one of my favourite players.”

Guardiola seems to have taken a shine to Phil, regularly singling him out and mentoring him. And the teenager feels blessed to work with the master tactician every day.

“There’s not really a better manager than him. He believes in me, I’m really thankful to him. To learn off him every day is a bonus really.”

In February 2017, before he had made a first team appearance, Foden gave us at City Watch an exclusive interview and told us that he looks up to David Silva. Now, he is learning directly from ‘El Mago’.

“David’s just a magician. I just watch him every day. In training he gives me a lot of advice. If I turn, he’ll say: ‘What if you were in a game?’ He gives me a lot of questions to answer.”

The world is at Phil Foden’s feet and making it at Manchester City in the long run will be a challenge, but it is one he’s up for as he looks to continue his dream of representing his beloved club.
