Pep’s Presser: Fernandinho, Sterling and Delph injury updates, new contract stories, Stoke away

Manchester City face Stoke City away on Monday night, their last game for a few weeks with no FA Cup tie the following weekend and an international break coming up.

To discuss the game and other matters, Pep Guardiola addressed the media at the CFA on Friday lunchtime.

Pep revealed that Fernandinho and Sterling are in good condition, while Fabian Delph is rated at 50/50 to appear on Monday.

“Some of the players are better. Fernandinho and Sterling are much better,” Pep said. “We have one or two training sessions until the game, we are going to decide on Sunday.

“Delph is like this, like that (50/50). The players are off today, so I don’t know the exact situation.”

There have been reports of Pep’s agent being in Manchester this week to discuss a new contract, but the City boss denied them.

“Sometimes the journalists have bad information. My agent is not in town. The journalist knows more information than me.”

Paul Lambert’s Stoke are involved in a fight for survival, sitting in the relegation zone, and Pep foresees a difficult game on Monday.

“Stoke away is always complicated. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League. That’s why I can imagine how tough it’ll be.”

Pep also isn’t a fan of Monday night games.

“I don’t like to play Monday because the weekend everyone is involved and then the weekend is over and we have to play. But we are going to work on that in these two days.

Girona FC are a club closely linked to City and Pep, with his brother being a part-owner with the CFG. Guardiola was asked about their overachieving in La Liga this season.

“It’s incredible what they have done so far this season. Pablo Machin, the manager, has done an amazing job.”

Finally, before the embargoed portion of the press conference, Pep was asked by Guillem Balague if he’s ever felt like Arsene Wenger while at City, after the Arsenal boss revealed he’s been suffering sleepless nights lately.

“When we don’t win the games, we are sleepless. We are not good. When you don’t win you suffer, always.”
