PEC Zwolle boss confirms defender’s move to Man City, discusses his chances under Guardiola

There were multiple reports in January that Dutch under-20 international Philippe Sandler had joined Manchester City from PEC Zwolle in a deal worth €3million (£2.6million) – a club record sale for PEC.

Both the player himself and PEC Zwolle coach, John van ‘t Schip, also seemed to confirm the deal.

Yet there was no announcement from either the Eredivisie club or Manchester City, meaning it wasn’t made official in January.

PEC boss van ‘t Schip, who is well-connected to the City Football Group having previously managed Melbourne City in Australia, has again confirmed that the 21-year-old is joining Manchester City and believes he’ll have a chance to impress Pep Guardiola.

“He will really get a chance (at City),” van ‘t Schip told reporters.

“I believe that the entire Manchester City squad will play in the World Cup, so the preseason is an excellent opportunity for Philippe to work with Pep Guardiola and also to play.”

“At the moment it is too much to ask (to play for City). Philippe is a very talented player who still has to learn a lot. If he can train in the preparation for the new season and play some matches…”

Sandler, a product of the famous Ajax academy, continues to feature regularly for PEC and has played the full 90 minutes in their last eight league games since returning from a collarbone fracture.
