Barcelona have effectively frozen out former Manchester City youth player Denis Suárez having grown tired of paying money to his former club, who included a number of clauses when they sold him to Camp Nou in 2013.
One of the clauses in the deal meant Barça have to pay City a fee of €800,000 for every 10 appearances he makes, which is capped at 100 appearances. To date, the 24-year-old has made 54 official appearances for the La Liga giants, meaning City have continued to profit on him.
According to Barcelona-based newspaper SPORT, Barcelona have had enough of paying out on one of their fringe players, and every new invoice that arrives from Manchester City is ‘received with displeasure’. However, with the agreement being contractual, they have no choice but to pay.
What makes it even harder for Denis is the fact that Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde told him in January that he was still part of his plans, meaning the once-capped Spain international stuck around despite the likes of Napoli showing some interest.
Denis Suárez has now gone 12 games without playing a single minute for Barça, with his progress being blocked by the club’s desire to tighten the purse strings.
