Ilkay Gundogan joined Manchester City in 2016 in a £20.1million deal – a bargain in today’s inflated market, despite the fact his Borussia Dortmund contract had only a year left.
The talented midfielder almost didn’t move to the Etihad though, and in an interview with Sport Arena Plus has said he came close to joining another team.
Gundogan, 27, said: “I was very close to signing for Barcelona, but at the end, it didn’t happen.
“But now I am where I want to be and I am very happy.”
The Germany ace missed 252 days with a cruciate ligament injury last season, but has begun to find his form again, recently scoring twice against FC Basel in the Champions League.
He rose to fame under the tutelage of current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp while at Borussia Dortmund, and was asked about working with Klopp compared to Guardiola.
“Klopp loved me, but I decided to go with Guardiola because his philosophy was very similar to my game.
“Klopp is like a father to me. Guardiola, a genius, and a teacher, he’s the best coach in the world.”
