Manchester City have been given encouragement in their pursuit of Lyon starlet Willem Geubbels, with the 16-year-old refusing to sign a professional contract with the Ligue 1 side.
According to RMC Sport, Pep Guardiola remains a suitor for the France under-18 striker, but Lyon’s domestic rivals AS Monaco appear to be in pole position as it stands.
Also eyeing deals for Geubbels, a young attacker capable of playing on the wings or as a forward, are Barcelona, Inter and RB Leipzig, but Monaco hope they can win this particular battle by offering him a quick pathway to the first team under coach Leonardo Jardim.
A former City academy player, Rony Lopes, is currently flourishing under Jardim’s charge, and the principality club have become famed for developing young talents, such as Kylian Mbappé, Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva.
City would like to add him to their swelling ranks of prospects at the CFA, but may need to convince him of a similar pathway to that which Monaco can offer in order to lure him to the Etihad.
