Manchester City are ready to loan Nigerian forward Olarenwaju “Larry” Kayode to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk as a sweetener in a deal to sign midfielder Fred, ESPN FC reports.
Kayode remains in limbo after a deadline day loan move from City to Ligue 1 side Amiens collapsed, essentially meaning he isn’t registered to play for Girona, his previous loan club, Amiens, or Manchester City.
With the Ukrainian transfer window open until March 28 however, Kayode has a new option and it is reported that the 24-year-old has been offered to Shakhtar on a temporary basis in a move that City hope will facilitate Fred’s arrival in the summer.
The Blues were unable to agree a deal to acquire Fred in the January transfer window, and the recent injury to Fernandinho has shown that there is a lack of a natural replacement, although the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gündoğan have done commendable jobs in the ‘No 6’ role.
Yaya Touré, who made his first appearance since January yesterday, is certain to leave the club when his contract expires in June, and despite links to the likes of Julian Weigl and Sergej Milinković-Savić, all signs point to Fred remaining Pep Guardiola’s number one target to reinforce the midfield.
And sending Kayode to Shakhtar would be a clever maneuver to ensure Pep gets his man in the summer.
