He was on the score sheet on Wednesday night as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Roma in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, and Manchester City target Fred has had more to say about the Blues’ interest.
Speaking to UOL Esporte before the Roma fixture, the 24-year-old again left no doubt about how flattered he is to be subject to interest from Pep Guardiola and City. Guardiola has spoken highly of Fred, something he is very aware of.
“Coming from someone like Guardiola, now one of the most recognised managers in the world, it makes me proud.
“It motivates me even more to continue to do my best in every training session and match.”
Guardiola spoke to Fred after City faced Shakhtar in the Champions League and the Brazilian was asked to recall it.
“We met briefly after that game. He praised my performance, I thanked him and complimented his team. It was all very fast, nothing more.
“Everything about the compliments he did and the supposed City interest I heard in the press. I try not to worry about it.
“I let my representatives take care of that. My focus is on Shakhtar, with whom I have a contract.”
Fred’s performance against Roma last night showed again why Guardiola is so interested, with recent reports suggesting that talks over a deal are at an advanced stage.
