We’ve heard many reports that Manchester City are close to signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred in recent months and from Italy today comes another story that the 24-year-old is almost certainly Etihad-bound.
It is reported by Calciomercato that further talks between the two clubs have taken place in recent weeks over a deal that was put into motion during the January transfer window.

City and Shakhtar chiefs are now said to have ‘almost’ reached an agreement that will see the Brazilian international, tipped to be Fernandinho’s long-term heir at City, arrive in June for a fee of around €50million (£44.1million).
Fred continues to speak publicly of his interest in joining City, and despite the likes of Julian Weigl (Borussia Dortmund) and Jorginho (Napoli) being on Pep Guardiola’s radar, the strongest evidence points to Fred being City’s next midfield reinforcement.
He was in outstanding form last night as Shakhtar took a 2-1 lead over Roma into their Champions League Round of 16 second leg, scoring the decisive goal, a wonderful free kick.
It was an overall impressive performance by the midfield workhorse, and showed why Pep Guardiola is so eager to add him to the ‘Shark Team’.
